紐西蘭總理凱伊28日在聯合國大會上宣布，預計明年把紐國東北方面積廣大的海域畫設為海洋保護區，全面禁止捕魚及採礦活動。這項保護海底景觀生態的決策，獲得環保團體肯定。該區域位在南太平洋，距離紐西蘭東北海岸約1000公里。海域上有一群火山島組成的克馬得群島（Kermadec Islands）。紐西蘭政府計畫明年通過立法，以後此區全面禁止商業與休閒性捕魚活動，與石油、天然氣等礦藏的探勘開採。

紐西蘭總理凱伊28日在聯合國大會上宣布，預計明年把紐國東北方面積廣大的海域畫設為海洋保護區，全面禁止捕魚及採礦活動。這項保護海底景觀生態的決策，獲得環保團體肯定。該區域位在南太平洋，距離紐西蘭東北海岸約1000公里。海域上有一群火山島組成的克馬得群島（Kermadec Islands）。紐西蘭政府計畫明年通過立法，以後此區全面禁止商業與休閒性捕魚活動，與石油、天然氣等礦藏的探勘開採。

凱伊表示，「克馬得海洋保護區」涵蓋面積62萬平方公里（約台灣面積17倍），「是全球地理與地質環境最多樣化的地區之一」。這塊海域擁有數千種瀕臨絕種的生物，包括近35種鯨魚及海豚、150種魚類，以及全球7種海龜之中的3種，還有世界最長的海底火山弧，及第二深的海溝，深度達10公里。凱伊這個決定，令每年產值達14億紐幣（約台幣293億元）的紐西蘭海產出口業大為震驚。「紐西蘭海產食品產業協會」主席克萊蒙特說，禁令也包括鮪魚捕撈業，「我們需要時間來評估整體衝擊」。據2013年統計數據，鮪魚是紐國第四大出口海產。受影響的還有加拿大鸚鵡螺礦業公司。此公司正等著紐國發下許可，準備在克馬得海域探勘礦藏。先前，美國、英國與澳洲也相繼將太平洋局部海域畫設為保護區，加上克馬得海域之後總共有4處，使太平洋保護面積超過350萬平方公里。「世界自然基金會」（WWF）紐西蘭分會執行長豪依表示，「我們肯定政府採取果斷行動保護這極為特別的區域，免於受採礦及漁撈損害。」(中國時報)，
